Outstanding, impressive, intimidating Dubrovnik’s city walls. Initially built do defend, later completed to impress. For centuries, fortifications and bastions served their purpose – fostering and protecting life within them. It took a long time to complete building the walls, there was even a time when old Ragusa ran out of stone. In today’s times, our city walls attract thousands of guests worldwide because Dubrovnik holds the title of being one of the best kept medieval cities in the world. It is definitely an opportunity not to miss – stroll up and down the walls and actually feel history under your feet.
Another reason why walking the walls is so appealing – the view is amazing. Terracotta rooftops, well organised side streets intersecting in perfect order one with another, church towers and domes leaning over small stone houses – by watching this, you become a part of the story and one can only be impressed by how well developed Ragusa was. Have in mind your view will capture houses and buildings from the middle ages.
To truly understand Dubrovnik’s fascinating story and its appeal to everybody, take a tour and see the old town from below and above, explore the little side streets and listen about the legends and curiosities that are hidden in every stone. Discover why Ragusa remained independent for a long time and how it managed to keep its treasure and the most important item – liberty. Republic’s main motto was: Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro which means: Liberty is not to be sold for all of the world’s gold. Time passed, centuries, Dubrovnik remained almost intact, until only 30 years ago when some of the worst atrocities were committed against the civilians living their regular everyday lives and not expecting to see bombs dropped from all directions on UNESCO protected heritage site.
