Game of Thrones is one of the most popular television series distributed by HBO and if you are a real fun of it, Dubrovnik is the right place for you.
With the large outer walls, narrow streets of the Old town and fortifications built by human hands over time, Dubrovnik in Croatia was the perfect place for King’s Landing.
Filming grandly exploits all these beauties of Old Town of Dubrovnik, architecture, and monuments, so there was no need for special effects in order to play the fortified port city of King’s Landing or special measures for scenery too.
So, if you are passionate about Game of Thrones, a visit to Dubrovnik will give you whole experience because of the way in which it is soo good integrate into the setting of the series.
These are the locations that you can see on the tour:
The Red Keep (Lovrijenac Fort)
There is a lot of scenes that have been filmed inside the Lovrijenac Fort (next to the Walls of Dubrovnik) that take place within the Red Keep – like the long dialogues between Cersei and Littlfinger in Season 1.
If you want to have a wedding with a style, you can rent the Lovrijenac fort.
The Purple Wedding (Gradac Park)
The Purple Wedding (where Joffrey gets poisoned) was filmed in Gradac park. You can see this park and parking lot from the top of the Lovrijenac Fort. It is difficult to recognize the scenes because there were a lot of physical props added to the scene like an extra statue in the middle of the fountain.
While filming, they had to close off the whole parking lot next to the park for a few days so the traffic situation in Dubrovnik was difficult for this part of the town.
The Riot (Pile Gate)
The riot starts when the Joffrey orders the guards to kill everyone in the crowd after someone throws manure at Joffrey’s face.
This is another famous scene in Game of Thrones and it is filmed at Pile Gate. Pile Gate leads into the Old Town and you access it from a drawbridge.
The Walk of Shame (Spanish steps by Saint Ignatius Church)
The scene when Cersei had to walk naked in the streets of Kings Landing from the Great Sept of Baelor to the Red Keep (one of the gates where you can enter the Old Town Dubrovnik) is probably one of the most famous scenes in Game of Thrones. All the time there was an annoying woman ring a bell in her ear saying shame.
The first scene of this shot (where Cersei is standing on the top of the stairs of this street) is filmed on top of the Spanish steps in Dubrovnik, by Saint Ignatius Church. The other scenes of this shot are filmed in the other parts of Dubrovnik.
In this street, there is a lot of restaurants and coffee bars. For filming this scene they had to pay a lot of money to all owners of these shops to close for the whole day. That is why this is the most expensive scene in Game of Thrones shot in Dubrovnik.
City of Qarth: The Rector’s Palace
Qarth was filmed in different locations around Dubrovnik like Minceta Tower (The House of Undying), Rector’s Palace (when the Thirteen rulers of Qarth rejects Danaerys after she asked for help and ships), On this tour we will visit Minceta Tower and Rector’s Palace
