King's Landing (Dubrovnik) and the Iron Throne (Lokrum) Tour

Game of Thrones filming locations in Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik was known in Game of Thrones under another alias and it was City of Qarth. Many of those scenes were filmed on Lokrum island, which is stunning enough with or without HBO’s filming. One of the best parts of this tour is you sitting on the Iron Throne which is also located on Lokrum, as a part of Game of Thrones Visitor Center where we finish the tour. While filming, HBO gave the Iron Throne to Dubrovnik city and it’s based on Lokrum island so if you are a real fun, you definitely have to sit down on it and take a picture.
Before going to the island, we first show you Dubrovnik’s old town and Lovrjenac castle (Red Keep) where the majority of King’s Landing scenes happened. Lokrum is the final part of the tour and you can choose to stay on the island for swimming or sightseeing, just make sure to take a towel and bathing suits along with some sunscreen. Definitely one of Lokrum’s major attractions are rabbits and peacocks walking freely amongst guests.
It is immediately clear, once you see Dubrovnik’s streets, that it was King’s Landing, the resemblance is uncanny. From Lovrjenac we have a gorgeous view over Dubrovnik’s old town walls where you can see for yourselves just how many similarities there are between real life and the fantasy world.

During this tour, we’ll visit:

– Lokrum island (City of Qarth)
– Pile bay
– Lovrjenac castle (The Red Keep)
– Dubrovnik’s old town

Lokrum Island (City of Qarth)

Qarth was filmed in different locations around Dubrovnik like Minčeta Tower (The House of Undying), Rector’s Palace (when the Thirteen rulers of Qarth rejects Danaerys after she asked for help and ships), Lokrum Island – the island in front of the Walls of Dubrovnik (the scene with the party where a woman with a veiled face gives a message to Ser Jorah).Read more about Lokrum as City of Qarth Game of Thrones filming location

The Red Keep (Lovrijenac Fort)

There is a lot of scenes that have been filmed inside the Lovrijenac Fort (next to the Walls of Dubrovnik) that take place within the Red Keep – like the long dialogues between Cersei and Littlfinger in Season 1.

FUN FACT:

If you want to have a wedding with a style, you can rent the Lovrijenac fort.

The Riot (Pile Gate & Pile Bay)

Pile BayPile bay is the place where the Lannisters bid farewell to Myrcella. Shae and Sansa was watching ships in Pile bay before Lord Baelish discussed escape plans with Sansa. There was also the scene of killing Robert Baratheon’s bastards in Pile bay.Pile GateThe riot starts when the Joffrey orders the guards to kill everyone in the crowd after someone  throws manure at Joffrey’s face. This is another famous scene in Game of Thrones and it is filmed at Pile Gate. Pile Gate leads into the Old Town and you access it from a drawbridge.Read more about Pile Gate as The Riot Game of Thrones filming location

Dubrovnik Game of Thrones Walk of Shame

The Walk of Shame (Spanish steps by Saint Ignatius Church)

The scene when Cersei had to walk naked in the streets of Kings Landing from the Great Sept of Baelor to the Red Keep (one of the gates where you can enter the Old Town Dubrovnik) is probably one of the most famous scenes in Game of Thrones. All the time there was an annoying woman ring a bell in her ear saying shame. The first scene of this shot (where Cersei is standing on the top of the stairs of this street) is filmed on top of the Spanish steps in Dubrovnik, by Saint Ignatius Church. The other scenes of this shot are filmed in the other parts of Dubrovnik.Read more about Jesuit Stairs as Walk Of Shame Game of Thrones filming location

FUN FACT:
In this street, there is a lot of restaurants and coffee bars. For filming this scene they had to pay a lot of money to all owners of these shops to close for the whole day. That is why this is the most expensive scene in Game of Thrones shot in Dubrovnik.

City of Qarth: The Rector’s Palace

Qarth was filmed in different locations around Dubrovnik like Minceta Tower (The House of Undying), Rector’s Palace (when the Thirteen rulers of Qarth rejects Danaerys after she asked for help and ships),  On this tour we will visit Minceta Tower and Rector’s Palace
